MLP Season 1 : Evil Enchantress Song

 

This time I'll review the two versions of Evil Enchantress Song, from the episode Bridle Gossip.

Starting with the Pinkie's one !
Lyrics here :

She's an evil enchantress

She does evil dances

And if you look deep in her eyes

She'll put you in trances

Then what will she do?

She'll mix up an evil brew

Then she'll gobble you up

In a big tasty stew

            Sooo.... WATCH OUT!

 Another Pinkie's random song, but not written by Daniel Ingram this time ^^

The lyrics are about Zecora and on how she is seen by everypony in town. I have the feeling that Pinkie has a fixation about being gobbled (Nightmare Night and Nightmare Moon) ^^
She compare the zebra with a hypnotist and directly accuse her of being the servant of evil forces and ponyphage as well. The last line doens't really sound like an advice to me, but more like a warning, something she put in her song just to finish it on a scary note, even though her friends (except Applejack) just stare at her and don't really understand what happened.


The whole instrumental background is mostly composed of percussion of all kinds : wooden ones, bells, triangle and cymbals of course. Some funny effects are also here and there , but the main melody is played by something that sounds like a bassoon to me. That's all for the instruments, it's just a little song after all. The overall result really fits the vocals, giving some kind of hypnotic feeling, because of the bassoon playing fast higher and higher notes throughout the song.


The voice is our regular high pitched Pinkie, but this time she seems in a hurry, almost shouting the penultimate syllabe of each line and drilling our ears with her 'WATCH OUT'.


The video is just hilarious, especially the moment with Applejack and her sister ^^ But I love seeing Pinkie dancing in a 'barynya' way (google it xD), or seeing the looks on her friends' faces


I don't have much to say on this song, it's not the kind of tune you sing when you're alone, it's definitely a good song in the context, but that's all, I think. No special lesson to lean here obivously xD By the way, the tempo is really fast, around 170 BPM ^^

Let's now speak about the Flutterguy version

About the instruments, there aren't a lot of them : cymbals and contrebass played pizzicato principaly, but sometimes we can hear a djembe drum and wooden percussions too, specially a scraping one around the end. The best way to sing it is 'dow dow dow dow ...' and I think I sums it all up xD. The overall result fits very well with the place : the Everfree Forest is definitely a place for jazz and blues.

As I said, the song is in a blues/jazz style, and the pace is radically slowed down. The voice is very deep for the first time in a song of the show, and it's hilarious to listen to Fluttershy with that sound.

I've found a video where the background music has been removed, and I can tell that the voice does all the work here, the instrumentalization is just here to support the awesomness of that voice xD You can feel the instruments juste by hearing that beatiful voice !

The video is also really funny, Pinkie illustrating every word Flutterguy is singing, and just seeing her eyes is enough to enjoy the situation. Then you add some silly moves and a pending tongue and you have a beautiful WTF, Pinkie Pie style !

The tempo here is very slow, around 116 BPM I believe. You are more likely to hum this version of Evil Enchantress than the other one I think, because of its pace and pitch. 

Frankly, these aren't songs I think of when I'm thinking of any MLP song (I can't wait to review the last ones, especially This Day Aria ! But there are so many other songs I must do ... Even little ones like this one and the five I did before ...) I'm looking forward to review a big song for once (Winter Wrap Up is the first, but I must review Pinkie's Polka Before ^^) but I'm always too lazy to actually get rid of all the other ones I must do, that's why it has been two weeks since my last post, not to mention that I must prepare for the baccalauréat ...
